James Mulva

Former Chairman and CEO of ConocoPhillips

James J. Mulva served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ConocoPhillips from 2002 until his retirement in 2012. Prior to that time, he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Phillips Petroleum Company from 1999 to 2002. Nearly forty years of his career were spent with Phillips Petroleum and the merged ConocoPhillips.

 

Mr. Mulva graduated from the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree and an MBA in Finance in 1969 and served four years as a U.S. Naval Officer for the Commander Middle East Force (Bahrain) and the Navy Finance Center (Cleveland). Joining Phillips Petroleum in 1973, Mr. Mulva’s primary roles included being the Vice President for Phillips Europe/Africa (London – 1980-1984) and the Chief Financial Officer (1990-1994) and the President and Chief perating Officer (1994-1999) for Phillips Petroleum.

 

Mr. Mulva led the formation of ChevronPhillips Chemical, the formation of GPM/Duke Midstream Venture, the continued operation/redevelopment of Norway Operations (Ekofisk), the acquisition of Arco Alaska and related domestic refineries and the acquisition of TOSCO (a refining company). He also led the development of LNG operations and petrochemicals in Qatar and LNG in Australia, the merger of Phillips Petroleum and Conoco (2002) and the split of ConocoPhillips into ConocoPhillips (E&P) and Phillips 66 upon his retirement in 2012.

 

Mr. Mulva has served many years as a board member and past chairman of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as well as a board member of General Electric, General Motors, and Statoil. He is a former board member and past chairman of the American Petroleum Institute, a member of the American Petroleum Council and a member of the Business Roundtable and the Business Council.

 

Mr. Mulva was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Texas in 2005 and also received the University’s Presidential Citation in 2014. He holds honorary degrees from the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Mulva was named the International Petroleum Executive of the Year in 2002 (London) and was given the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in 2005 by King Harald V of Norway and the Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement in 2012 by the American Petroleum Institute. Mr. Mulva continues to be active in numerous philanthropic initiatives
