Professor Nick Butler

A former Financial Times columnist and Visiting Professor at King's College London

Nick Butler is one of the United Kingdom’s most respected energy economists, widely recognised for translating complex energy-system challenges into clear, policy-relevant insights for business leaders and governments. A former Financial Times columnist and Visiting Professor at King’s College London, Mr Butler has helped shape debate on energy security, climate policy, and the economics of decarbonisation. His influence spans industry, academia, and government advisory circles.

Drawing on senior leadership experience at BP, where he served as Group Vice President for Strategy and Policy Development, Mr Butler combines economics, geopolitics, and technology to provide a distinctive perspective on the global energy transition. His practical understanding of how major energy companies respond to policy, market signals, and technological change has enabled him to challenge overly simplistic narratives while maintaining a strong commitment to pragmatic climate action.

Mr Butler is Chair of Promus Associates and a member of the board of Carbon Neutral Fuels – a business dedicated to reducing the emissions from the use of transportation fuels – reflecting his commitment to practical solutions at the intersection of climate, technology, and development. He was the founding Chair of the Policy Institute at King’s College London and has advised leading UK research organisations, including the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University and the Faraday Institution.

Throughout his career, Mr Butler has championed long-term thinking on energy security, investment, and the transition to a lower-carbon economy. His work consistently emphasises resilient energy systems, credible transition pathways, stable investment frameworks, and durable climate policies that provide the certainty needed to accelerate decarbonisation.
